Terms You Need to Know | Types of Sites | Content | Hosting | Promotion (Web Traffic) | Webmaster Resources

The terms below are just a few terms you're going to need to know before beginning your foray into the
adult webmaster world. This list is, by far, NOT a comprehensive list of every little idiom, but it is intended
to be enough lingo to get you off the ground:

Banner - A banner is a graphic (usually either horizontal or vertical) advertisement on a website. Adult
webmasters use banners as an advertising tool.

Bot - A bot is a small program or routine used by webmasters to repeatedly execute certain tasks. Bots is
short for "robots" and alludes to the performance of tasks with no human intervention. See also: Hit Bot

Cheater - A cheater is someone who artifically inflates numbers (usually with the aid of bots) in order to
get more traffic from traffic exchange programs. Cheaters may also be anyone who tarnishes the image of
the adult web industry by using malware or other unfavorable programs.

Content - Content is what keeps people interested in a web site. The pictures, videos, web cams and other
items available at the website are the website's content. Content can either be reserved for paying members
(in the case of pay sites) or given away for free (as in the case of free sites and thumbnail galleries).

CSS - Cascading Style Sheets are widely used to keep the look and feel of a website consistent. A CSS file
in a website applies the same style to all of that site's pages.

Free Site - A Free Site is a type of site.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol is the way individual and batches of files are transferred around the Internet.
You will most likely be using FTP, or an FTP program such as CuteFTP, to put your website's files onto
your web server.

Hit - A web site hit is when one particular file is viewed by a website visitor. Each file, graphic or element
that is displayed to a website visitor is considered a hit and is not an accurage assessment of how many times
the site has actually been viewed. For example, a website with 20 graphic elements that is only viewed once
will be considered to have 20 hits. See also: Unique

Hit Bot - A hit bot is a script used by webmasters to automatically increment the hit count to a web page.
Hit bots are often viewed as very inappropriate methods of generating website traffic in hit exchange programs.

Hosting - Hosting is having web files (pages, graphics, etcetera) hosted on a server and made available to
the public.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language is the language in which web pages are written. If you do not have
at least a basic understanding of HTML, or an advanced HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, you should
strongly consider taking the Easy Way.

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol is the protocol by which HTML documents are transferred across
the Internet.

Link List - A Link List is a type of site.

Malware - Malicious Software can take many forms ranging from viruses to trojans to spyware. The most
common forms of malware are spyware and trojans.

Pay Site - A Pay Site is a type of site.

Pop-Under - A pop under is a communication tool that causes a new, small web browser window to appear
underneath all currently opened windows. The pop-under is an effective advertising tool because a visitor
sees the advertisement only when closing the active web browser window, usually long after visiting the
originating page. Overused by advertisers, the pop-under is not favorably viewed.

Pop-Up - A pop up is a communication tool that causes a new, small web browser window to appear over
top of a web page. Overused by advertisers, the pop up is not favorably viewed.

Script - A script is a small program embedded in a web page that causes some action to be performed.

Sponsor - A sponsor is a website or company- usually an adult pay site - which provides resources (such as
content, bandwidth, hosting, etcetera) to operators of various types of free sites. The sponsor also pays these
sites to send new subscribers to the pay site, generating income for both sites.

Spyware - Spyware is software installed on a user's computer (usually through an invisible script on a website)
without that user's knowledge. Spyware can be used for tasks such as targeting advertisments to a user when
that user visits related web pages or skimming personal information. Spyware should NEVER be used and is
generally associated with cheaters.

TG - Thumbnail Gallery is a type of site but, mainly, an advertising tool used by adult webmasters. It generally
consists of 10-14 thumbnail images which, when clicked, display full-sized adult images branded with the link
and URL of the sponsor (see above).

TGP - Thumbnail Gallery Post is a type of site and advertising tool used by adult webmasters. It normally
consists of a group of links to various Thumbnail Galleries (see above) and samples from those TGs.

Traffic - Traffic is the flow of visitors to a web page.

Trojan - A trojan is a piece of malware which infiltrates a user's computer without that user's knowledge and
procedes to execute other tasks. Trojans are commonly used to take advantage of an unknowing person's
computer resources to send unwanted email (spam). Trojans should NEVER be used and are generally
associated with cheaters.

Top List - A top list is a type of site, very much like a link list (see above) but with sponsored links at the
top of the list.

Unique - A unique is an individual count of visitors to a website. Each individual viewer is considered to be
one "unique." The count of uniques is the actual count of visitors to a website.
